January 5, 2015 - Extreme Home Defense - Now that the holidays are over, the freezing cold has arrived with snow and ice. Are you prepared?  I found a wonderful article this past weekend that talked about icicles and wanted to share with our readers.  "Icicles – your first warning sign of a possible ice dam. Wintertime icicles may look charming, but they usually signal a serious — and potentially costly — problem. Often lurking behind that thick ridge of ice on your roof is a pool of melted water, hence the term ice dam. That accumulated water can work its way under roof shingles and into the home, causing significant damage to ceilings, walls, and floors. Additionally, the sheer weight of the ice dam often causes gutters and downspouts to pull away from the house, sometimes bringing the fascia boards with them. Preventing ice dams helps avoid damage and costly repairs"  For more on this and other helpful information visit

December 15, 2014 - Prepare For The Holidays - The holidays are fast approaching and the question is, Have you completed all your holiday shopping?  Like many people, I have also saved some of my shopping for the last minute.  I have found a wonderful app that helps me keep my shopping trips to a minimum.  It is called Flipp.  You can find it on your google play store.  Flipp updates each day and shows you all the adds published by retailers such as Walmart, Shopko, JCPennys and Target.  With this app I am able to find what is on sale and great gift ideas.  Another great app to add to your collection is Target's Cartwheel.  With Cartwheel you can find items that are on sale, at it to your sale que and use the coupons during your checkout process.  For more information on these great apps, visit your google playstore.  I hope this helps you on your shopping trips as much as it has helped me!

November 13, 2014 - Prepare For Winter - Have you prepared for winter yet?  Here are 5 tips to help you prepare for winter.  Now is the time to prune.  Pruning to remove dead branches is an important step to improving safety  in high-traffic areas.  Lifeless branches are more susceptible to break and fall under the weight of the winter.  Mulch, Mulch, Mulch!  Mulch helps regulate soil temperatures to prevent freeze-thaw cycles, which can cause a young tree's roots to heave up out of the ground-creating an unstable and unhealthy condition.  Inspect!  Visually inspect all trees to determine if they've become a liability that needs to removed.  Brace for ice.  Trees most susceptible to ice damage are upright evergreens, such as arborvitae and juniper.  Fertilize.  Applying fertilizer to trees before winter will ensure they are ready for spring.

November 4, 2014 - Winterizing - Winter is now upon us, have you thoroughly winterized your home? has some great tips to winterizing your home.  They suggest cleaning out your gutters, block and leaks in your home, make sure your insulation in your home is effective, check your furnace, double check your heating ducts and have them cleaned, face your windows if need be, clean out that chimney (if you have one), reverse your ceiling fan, wrap your pipes, and make sure to double check all your alarms in your home.  For more detailed information on what I listed, please visit MSN at this link:

November 3, 2014 - FALL - Winter is fast approaching and the real questions is, Are You Ready??  Well, if not, we have your Winter Preparedness Checklist here!  Make sure you have your snow shovel, de-icing compound and waterproof floor matts.  Incase of an emergency, make sure you have plenty of food and water in your home.  Some other things to make sure you have handy:  Food that doesn't require heating or refrigeration, such as canned meats, soups and stews, cereal, and energy bars, manual can opener, paper plates, cups and plastic utensils,1 gallon of water per person per day (allow enough for four days), flashlights and batteries, battery-powered radio, battery-powered clock, cellular phone, first-aid kit (printable first-aid kit checklist), four-day supply of prescription medicines, blanket and cold-weather clothing for each family member, pet food and additional water for household pets.  Other items to make sure you have in your vehicle are: Bag of sand, road salt or non-clumping cat litter. The bag's extra weight means better traction, and the contents can be spread under slipping tires. Ice scraper Jumper cables, small shovel (to dig snow away from wheels, or scatter sand on roadway), tire chains (every driver should practice putting them on), flares or reflective triangle to warn other motorists if you break down, blanket, flashlight and batteries, gallon jug of drinking water, first aid kit.  One more thing you want to make sure is to check all your fluids in vehicle.

February 25, 2014 - SCAM ALERT - I was reading this morning about a new scam alert on TMJ4 and I felt this was important to share with all of our readers. It reads, "Wisconsin officials warn of new utility scam.

MADISON -- Wisconsin regulators are sending out a warning about an email scam that appears to be a utility bill.  The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection says it has received a handful of complaints from consumers who received a fake bill for utility services from "Energy Billing Service" or "Energy Billing System."  WE Energies has also informed the state that it has received complaints from more than 50 customers as well. The state agency says the fake bills often are for $500, $524 or $524.30. Those who receive it are asked to click on a link to view their most recent bill, an action that could unleash a virus or lead to a scam website to obtain personal banking information."  Please be aware of this new scam and if you see this make sure to report this right away!

February 13, 2014 - Warmer Weather - This winter has been long, cold and snowy!  But luckily we will see some warmer weather by next week.  Visit Today's TMJ4 for local weather updates!!

January 27, 2014 - Polar Vortex - This week will be another cold one with winter weather advisories issued for most of Wisconsin.  Most agree that this has been one of the coldest winters we have seen in many years.  The good news is we are halfway threw winter!!  For those of you who may wonder why we are seeing this extreme cold, we can blame the Polar Vortex.  What is a Polar Vortex??  The Polar Vortex is the pattern of winds around the North Pole.  The stratosphere is the upper middle part of the atmosphere, and is the level of the Jet Stream winds.  Colder temperatures in the stratosphere over the Arctic are associated with the positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation and are indicative of stronger polar winds.  For more information about the Polar Vortex, visit Discovery Channel.

January 14, 2014 - Ice Quakes - This winter season with all the snow and ice we have seen more and more, what the meteorologists are calling, ice quakes. What is an ice quake you might say?  Well an ice quake is a large crack in the ground and often a large boom is heard prior to the existence of the crack.  Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to prevent an ice quake.  Once the snow season has moved on you will be able to cover the cracks or contact someone who can come repair any minor damages you may have.  Major roadways are seeing the most of these damages and are working hard to cover cracks and pot holes.  Be careful while driving though because large pot holes can cause damage to your vehicle and tires.

January 3, 2014 - Car Care In The Cold - This year's winter season in Wisconsin has been one of our worst with record lows and wind chills reaching up to -47 degrees.  Many residence in Wisconsin have had a number of issues with their vehicles due to the increasing low temperatures.  Each year prior to the winter season, we should take extra care in winterizing our vehicles.  Things we should double check is our vehicle battery.  If it is 4 years old or more it would be best to have that replaced prior to the winter season.  Another major car care issue is making sure all of your fluids are full.  The best thing is to take your vehicle into your local mechanic and have them do a once over on your car.

April 10, 2013 -  This is the best time to control crabgrass and other annual weeds with a pre-emergent herbicide in the lawn, however, caution must be used if your lawn was seeded in the fall, or if you are planning on seeding in spring.

March 25, 2013 -  Spring Green up and Weed Control - Its a great time to treat ornamental beds with a pre-emergent weed control for season long weed control. Fertilizer is also crucial this time of year for an early spring green up.

May 17, 2012 - GRASS:  HOW SHORT IS TOO SHORT? - When cutting grass you want to make sure that you do not cut it too short, risking the chances of damaging your lawn.  A good rule of thumb is to not cut more than 1/3 of the leaf blade.  If the grass is really long, you are better off doing two cuttings in a short period of time.

March 10, 2012 - SHORELINE RESTORATION - Each year shorelines can receive considerable damage due to the shifting, freezing and melting of ice.  There are many environmentally friendly solutions that can be applied to repair and restore your shoreline without causing damage to mother nature and Envirocon is one of the few landscapers in the lake country area that has the necessary equipment for the project.  By use of our barge, we can often reduce or eliminate the damage that occurs when trying to haul equipment and materials across your lawn.  In additon, the barge may allow us to greatly reduce the overall cost of the project.  So call your favorite landscaper today so you can be enjoying your shoreline by Memorial weekend.

February 15, 2012 - NEW LAWN INSTALLATION - Which method is best?  If you are searching for a landscaper to install a new lawn or repair your current lawn, you have three options to complete the task:  seed, sod, or hydroseed.

  • Seed - initially the least expensive of all the methods but requires a great deal of time and is very susceptible to mother nature.  Heavy rains can wash away your seed, birds can decide to setup camp on your front lawn and have a feast, and the sun can quickly dry out your seeds.
  • Sod - instant lawn but is the most expensive method.  May require a great deal of watering.  Good for small areas.
  • Hydroseeding -  economical, easy to care for, weed free, and resilient.  Seed, water, fertilizer and a fiber material are mixed together in a tank and then sprayed onto a prepared lawn using a hose.  New lawn growth is quick and healthy.  Excellent for large areas and hillside lawns.

January 25, 2012 - SNOW HAULING - Is snow piling up in your commercial lot?  Envirocon's snow removal services go beyond plowing and ice removal.  Envirocon has the equipment capable of hauling snow away in order to keep the traffic in your commercial parking lot running smoothly.  Big piles of snow means less parking, more traffic issues and the potential for accidents.  Keep your customers happy by keeping your lot safe and free of snow and ice.

January 9, 2012 - Landscape companies come and go annually, consequently it is imperative that as a consumer you need to research your potential landscaper for your upcoming project. Envirocon is a member of the Wisconsin Landscape Contractors Association (WLCA) and the WLCA recommends that a consumer should ask the following questions when choosing a landscaper.

  1. Is the contractor insured?
  2. Does the contractor have references?
  3. Do they require a contract?
  4. Is the contractor a member of any business organizations such as the Better Business Bureau (BBB)?
  5. What certifications or licenses are necessary and does the contractor carry them?

January 1, 2012 -We at Envirocon would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. What an interesting winter it has been. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicted a colder and snowier winter season for 2011-2012, but it has been anything but that. Temperatures this morning were a bit chilly at 7 degrees, but looks like another warmup this weekend. If you are a snow lover, check out Alpine Valley Ski Resort in East Troy.
